June in the Keys: Pride, Coralpalooza, and the Art of the Summer Afternoon

June is when the Keys shift into summer mode. The snowbirds are a memory, the sandbars fill up with locals on weekends, and every afternoon around 3pm the sky briefly loses its mind before clearing up for a perfect sunset. Hurricane season officially opens June 1, which mostly means we all glance at the tropics map once a week and go about our lives.

Here is what June 2026 looks like.

1. Key West Pride (Jun 3 to 7)

Five days, one of the most beloved small-city Prides in the country. This year's theme is "Color the Island." Street fair Saturday the 6th, and the parade closes Duval Street Sunday evening with the famous 100-foot sea-to-sea flag.

• Local Tip: The parade is genuinely a locals' event. Grab a spot near La Te Da or the upper Duval blocks before 6pm. And the Pride Follies at the Key West Theater are, no contest, the highlight of the week. Bike or Uber. Downtown parking does not exist this week.

2. Coralpalooza (Jun 4 to 6)

The Coral Restoration Foundation's annual reef-restoration event out of Key Largo: certified divers outplanting staghorn and elkhorn coral across the reef tract, timed to World Oceans Day. This year's dive slots are sold out, because of course they are.

• Local Tip: You can still show up. The evening land events in Key Largo are open to everyone, and snorkelers can volunteer for reef monitoring. Or just take it as your reminder that the nursery coral you see on a dive this summer was planted by a volunteer.

3. Swim Around Key West (Jun 12 to 14)

The only sanctioned open-water swim around the island: 12.5 miles, solo and relay divisions, main swim on Saturday the 13th, usually starting at Smathers Beach.

• Local Tip: Watching is free and genuinely great. Sunrise at Smathers with a coffee while 200 swimmers head out, then walk to the White Street Pier seawall to cheer them past mid-course. It is one of those only-in-Key-West spectator scenes.

4. Father's Day Dolphin Derby (Jun 19 to 20)

Two Conchs' 40th annual tournament out of Marathon, captain's meeting Friday, fishing Saturday. June mahi off Marathon is about as reliable as fishing gets, and the Saturday afternoon weigh-in is the fun part even if you never left the dock. Bring the kids, get some fish dip, hear some lies.

The June Short List

• Mango Madness opens at The Studios of Key West (Thu, Jun 4): the summer members' art show, always a good hang.
• Steve Earle plays the Key West Theater on Tuesday, June 9. That one will sell out if it has not already.
• Morada Way Art Walk (Thu, Jun 18, 6 to 9pm). Summer version, smaller crowd, Lorelei sunset after.
• Truman Waterfront Farmers Market runs every Thursday, 1 to 6pm. Get there early for the good produce; it sells out.
• Lobster is closed. Mini-season is late July. If someone offers you "fresh-caught" lobster this month, ask follow-up questions.

The move this month: do your boating and beach time in the morning, fish the evening bite, and let the afternoon storm be your nap window. That is summer in the Keys, and it works.
